What kind of parks are here
The parks are spread between Burgh-Haamstede, Westenschouwen and the Zeepeduinen. Most of what is on offer are detached holiday homes and bungalows for four to eight people, alongside two campsites with pitches and chalets. Most sites sit in or against the forest, a short cycle from the coast.
The beach and the dunes
At Westenschouwen the Boswachterij Westenschouwen, the largest woodland in Zeeland, runs almost up to the dune ridge. To the southwest lie the Verklikkerduinen, with the Verklikkerstrand behind them, reachable only on foot or by bicycle along the Duinhoevepad. No promenade, no beach bars. For a beach with facilities, head to Renesse or Nieuw-Haamstede. The whole area is part of the Kop van Schouwen Natura 2000 site.
What else there is to do
The Plompe Toren stands on the sea dyke near Koudekerke, all that is left of a village swallowed by the water in the sixteenth century. Haamstede Castle sits in the village itself, surrounded by a park that is open to the public. Renesse lies further north and has more shops and restaurants; Zierikzee, with its historic harbour, lies to the east.
When to go
May and June are quiet, and the dunes are in flower. July and August are busy, especially in Renesse; for something calmer, stay around Westenschouwen. September is the best month for the beach, with warm water and empty paths. Winter is still and windy, and most beach pavilions are closed.
