South Limburg is the only Dutch region with real hills, and that's exactly why wellness works so well here. After a day of walking through rolling terrain, climbing past vineyards, and eating on a village terrace, the pace drops on its own. Holiday homes with their own sauna or hot tub make that relaxation complete. This is not an active holiday. This is a slow-down holiday.
Why South Limburg suits wellness so well
There's something about the Limburg landscape that sets it apart from the rest of the Netherlands. The land rolls, the villages have half-timbered houses instead of row homes, there are vineyards, starred restaurants, and the distances are short. Within 15 minutes you're always somewhere you can sit on a terrace with a view over a valley.
On Parkzie: 20 holiday homes in South Limburg. Relatively few, but a good share have wellness amenities: private sauna, hot tub, or a complete wellness area. Search directly by wellness to see the best options.
In South Limburg you don't need to make a programme. You only need to be, walk, eat and unwind.
The 5 best wellness spots in the region
1. Epen
One of the most beautiful half-timbered villages in the region, set in a valley surrounded by vineyards and walking trails. The surroundings are quiet, even in high season. Many holiday homes here have a Finnish sauna or a hot tub in the garden with a view over the hills. Ideal for couples who want to disconnect.
2. Slenaken
Small and rural, on a hilltop with views that stretch for kilometres. Ideal for morning walks. The wellness homes here are often private — no close neighbours, rarely any noise. Perfect for anyone who genuinely wants to be left alone.
3. Valkenburg and surroundings
More amenities than Epen and Slenaken: restaurants, thermal baths, Valkenburg town centre. Wellness combines well with culture here: the caves, the castle ruins, the casino scene. If you want to see more alongside the sauna, this is your base.
4. Gulpen
Central in the Heuvelland region. From Gulpen you're 15 minutes from Epen, Vijlen, Slenaken, or the Three Countries Point. Holiday homes are on average a bit more modern than in the smaller villages. Good choice for a first South Limburg visit.
5. Mechelen and Vijlen
Vijlen sits at the highest point in the Netherlands (323 metres), with one of the best views. Mechelen is the starting point for the best cycling routes. Both villages have a handful of holiday homes with saunas and terraces on the slopes.
What to expect from wellness homes
Not every wellness listing means the same thing. "Wellness" can mean: a one-square-metre sauna cabin, a hot tub on the terrace, or a complete area with Finnish sauna, infrared cabin, steam room and relaxation space. Always check the photos and read the description carefully.
The most common variants:
- Finnish sauna (private) — dry, 80-90°C, usually 2-4 people. Most common.
- Infrared cabin — milder, more deeply relaxing, good for people who can't take the heat.
- Hot tub outdoors — great in winter too. A view massively improves the experience.
- Steam room / hammam — less common in holiday homes, but available in luxury options.
- Wellness room — a combination of the above, often with shower or relaxation area.
A private hot tub with a view over the hills in December, with a glass of wine, is a quiet but profound holiday moment.
Combine wellness with the region itself
Outside the holiday home, South Limburg has everything for a complete slow-down week:
- Thermal baths — Thermae 2000 in Valkenburg is a day trip in itself
- Cycling or walking through vineyards — routes from almost every village
- Food — the region has several starred restaurants and Burgundian dining
- Spas and sauna gardens — like Mosaqua in Gulpen
- Three Countries Point — short walk to where the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany meet
When should you go?
Spring (April-May)
Asparagus season. Villages are in bloom, terraces are open, and restaurants serve asparagus everywhere. Most popular month: May. Book early.
Summer (June-August)
Warm, busy in tourist villages like Valkenburg. Less popular for serious wellness weekends because hot tub experiences are less intense in summer. Fine for outdoor activities.
Autumn (September-November)
The best moment for wellness. The weather is mild, the autumn colours are spectacular, the wine harvest brings vineyard events. Restaurants have game on the menu. From late October it's quieter and cheaper.
Winter (December-March)
The best time for an outdoor hot tub. Snow sometimes stays for weeks on the hills. Christmas markets in Aachen (just across the border) and Valkenburg are impressive. Highly recommended for couples.
What does it cost?
A weekend in a wellness holiday home in South Limburg costs around €400-€800 for 2 people, depending on luxury and season. Homes with a complete wellness area sit in the higher segment. Midweek (Mon-Fri) is often 30-40% cheaper than the weekend.
