The 7 regions of the Netherlands:
which one suits you?

Discover which Dutch region suits your holiday. From the forests of the Veluwe to the beaches of Zeeland: 7 regions compared.
№ — guide

The Netherlands is small, but surprisingly diverse. In an hour's drive you go from wide forests to salty beaches, from hilly landscape to polders stretching to the horizon. Which region suits your holiday depends on what you're looking for: quiet, action, water, hills or woods. This guide compares the seven most popular regions for holiday homes, with concrete numbers and honest trade-offs.

Dutch landscape

Why the region matters more than you think

Most people search for holiday homes by price or amenities, but they start with the wrong question. The region sets the entire mood of your holiday. Do you walk through forest every day or along a beach? Do you cycle past hills or through polders? Do you see five or fifty villages in an hour's drive?

The differences between regions are bigger than the differences between parks within a region.

Parkzie lists 234 holiday homes across seven active regions. Before you filter by price or amenities, answer this first: what kind of landscape do you want to spend this holiday in?

Veluwe

№01 · 93 homes Veluwe
On Parkzie 93 homes
Location Centre-East NL
From Randstad 1 hour
Vibe Woods and heath

The Veluwe is the largest contiguous nature reserve in the Netherlands. Here you'll find dense deciduous forests, purple heather in August, quiet sand drifts and thousands of kilometres of cycle paths. Wild boars, red deer and roe deer walk right past your path if you're out early enough.

The numbers: 93 holiday homes on Parkzie, spread across Apeldoorn, Ede, Ermelo, Voorthuizen and smaller villages. This is by far the biggest region, with the most variety too: from tiny lodges to group villas for 28 people.

The Kröller-Müller Museum and Paleis Het Loo offer cultural shelter on rainy days.

The Veluwe is ideal if you want to be outside most of the time. Downside: in peak season (July-August) the cycle paths get crowded. Better to go in May, June or September.

Who is the Veluwe for?

  • Cyclists who want day tours of 40 to 60 km
  • Families with kids who love spotting animals
  • People who prefer forest over beach
  • Quiet-seekers (as long as it's off-peak)

Zeeland

№02 · 60 homes Zeeland
On Parkzie 60 homes
Location Southwest coast
From Randstad 1.5 hours
Vibe Sea and space

Zeeland is made up of islands and peninsulas connected by bridges and dams. The North Sea beaches are long, wide and cleaner than many European alternatives. Walcheren, Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland are the most popular parts for holiday homes.

On Parkzie: 60 accommodations in Zeeland. A good share of them in Burgh-Haamstede, Renesse, Domburg and Vrouwenpolder. If you want to be near the beach, this is the logical pick: 31 homes in Zeeland are near the beach.

From Middelburg to Renesse is an hour's drive. You're never far from the other side of the region.

Downside: in summer the beaches get busy, especially around Renesse. Outside the season it's quiet and can be windy.

Who is Zeeland for?

  • Anyone who values beach over forest
  • Watersport fans (windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing)
  • Oyster lovers (Yerseke is the capital)
  • Kids who want to run across endless stretches of sand

Achterhoek

№03 · 29 homes Achterhoek
On Parkzie 29 homes
Location East Gelderland
From Randstad 1.5 hours
Vibe Silence and fields

The Achterhoek in the east of Gelderland is the best-kept secret in the Netherlands. Coulisse landscape with old farmhouses, small streams, open fields and quiet forests. No theme parks, no crowds, just landscape.

Parkzie lists 29 holiday homes here. Most around Lichtenvoorde and Winterswijk. Perfect for a week when you don't want to do anything. Cycle on back roads, drink coffee at an estate, head back to the house in the evening and read a book.

The Achterhoek is for people who go on holiday to do nothing.

For German visitors the Achterhoek makes geographic sense (it borders Germany), for the Dutch it's far from any big city. That helps the quiet.

Who is the Achterhoek for?

  • Couples who want to be together without distractions
  • Cyclists who prefer rural over wild
  • People with a dog that needs to run
  • Anyone after a digital detox

South Limburg

№04 · 20 homes South Limburg
On Parkzie 20 homes
Location Far south
From Randstad 2.5 hours
Vibe Hills and wellness

South Limburg is the only Dutch region with real hills. Half-timbered villages, vineyards, marl quarries and rolling meadows give a near-Belgian atmosphere. Valkenburg, Epen and Slenaken are the villages with the most holiday homes.

On Parkzie: 20 homes in South Limburg. A small selection, but a good share have wellness facilities. Wellness fits the region: it's where you come to slow down, cycle through hills and eat well.

Once you're there, it feels like you're abroad.

Downside: it's far for most Dutch travellers. From Amsterdam you're 2.5 hours away. But the drive pays off the moment you hit the hills.

Who is South Limburg for?

  • Walkers who want hills
  • Couples on a wellness weekend
  • Cyclists who don't shy away from climbing
  • Food lovers (eating and drinking are the main events here)

North Brabant

№05 · 18 homes North Brabant
On Parkzie 18 homes
Location South NL
From Randstad 1.25 hours
Vibe Family province

North Brabant is the family province of the Netherlands. Efteling, Beekse Bergen, Safaripark and nature reserves like the Loonse and Drunense Duinen make it a logical base for families with kids. Holiday homes around Cromvoirt, Oisterwijk and near Tilburg.

On Parkzie: 18 homes in North Brabant. Fewer than the Veluwe or Zeeland, but well-suited for specific family holidays. Filter on families to find the best options.

If you want a week at Efteling with the family, this is your base.

Who is North Brabant for?

  • Families combining Efteling or Beekse Bergen with their stay
  • Lovers of Burgundian food (Brabant sausage bread)
  • Walkers in the Loonse and Drunense Duinen

South Holland

№06 · 10 homes South Holland
On Parkzie 10 homes
Location Randstad coast
From Randstad 30 min
Vibe Beach and city

South Holland is densely populated, but it also has the wide dunes of the North Sea coast and the Green Heart behind them. Holiday homes are mostly in the dunes near Ouddorp and Hellevoetsluis. That combination makes it attractive: mornings at the beach, afternoons in Rotterdam or The Hague.

On Parkzie: 10 homes in South Holland. A modest selection, but strategically placed. You're within an hour of almost anything.

Beach in the morning, Mauritshuis in the afternoon. Nowhere is it this easy.

Who is South Holland for?

  • Couples who want to combine beach and city trips
  • Short-stay travellers from the Randstad
  • Art lovers (Mauritshuis, Boijmans, Kunsthal)

Friesland

№07 · 4 homes Friesland
On Parkzie 4 homes
Location North NL
From Randstad 2 hours
Vibe Water and silence

Friesland is the water-rich north. The Frisian Lake District is ideal for sailors and skippers, and the eleven cities are all worth visiting. The Frisian language, the terps and the Wadden coast also make it unique.

On Parkzie: 4 homes in Friesland. The selection is limited because most Frisian stays go through smaller platforms or direct. We're working on adding more options.

Who is Friesland for?

  • Watersport fans (sailing, SUP, kayaking)
  • City explorers (Eleven Cities tour)
  • Quiet-seekers (large parts are sparsely populated)

Regions on the way

The Netherlands has more regions that currently don't have holiday homes on Parkzie but will eventually: the Wadden Islands, Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel. As soon as we have more providers connected, they'll appear here too. You can already see them on our regions page.

How do you choose in the end?

Start with one question: what do you want to see every morning when you walk out the door? Forest, beach, hills, polder or water? That immediately filters out four regions and makes the decision much easier.

After that, check the practical factors: how far are you willing to drive? Do you need a theme park nearby? Are you travelling with a dog, with kids, or just with your partner?

Pick a region you've never been to at least once. The Netherlands is big enough to surprise, even regulars.
