What kind of parks are here
Every park here has wellness facilities, which is unusual: in most coastal towns that is a single park at best. Beyond that the choice is compact, with houses for four to eight people and little outside that range. The sites sit right against the dunes, between Schoorl and Bergen.
The dunes
The Klimduin is 51 metres high and climbs steeply from the village centre. From the top you look out over the woods and, on a clear day, as far as the sea. The dune area behind it holds more than sixty kilometres of walking paths and is managed by Staatsbosbeheer. The heath flowers in August, and that is when most walkers come.
What else there is to do
Bergen lies to the south and has galleries and an art history going back to the painters of the Bergen School. Alkmaar, with its cheese market, is inland. On the coast are Camperduin and Hargen aan Zee, both smaller and quieter than Bergen aan Zee.
When to go
Spring is quiet in the dunes and the woods come into leaf. August brings the heather into flower but also the crowds. September and October offer the best of both: warm enough for the beach, and the woods fill with a thousand species of fungi. Winter is for those who want the wind.
