Rhenen sits at the south-eastern tip of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, where the ridge meets the Nederrijn. It is the only place on this list without a beach, and you notice what takes its place: woodland, height and a river.

Three parks from the same provider, but different in character: cottages with a pool and brasserie, luxury lodges in the middle of the ridge, and sustainable lodges modelled on the old tobacco barns of the region. The choice runs from two to twelve people, with most houses for six. Two of the three have wellness facilities.
Kwintelooijen lies between Rhenen and Veenendaal and is a former sand quarry that left behind a terraced landscape, with views across the Gelderse Vallei. It is part of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park. Along the Nederrijn lies the Palmerswaard, river nature with pools where beavers and waterbirds live. The Prattenburg estate is open to walkers.
Ouwehands Dierenpark stands on the Grebbeweg and is the only zoo in the Netherlands with giant pandas and koalas. The Berenbos takes in bears that had a poor existence elsewhere. On the Grebbeberg is the military war cemetery, and the town itself has the Cunera tower.
Spring suits the woods and Kwintelooijen, which fills with flowering plants. Summer is zoo season and busy accordingly. In autumn the woods on the ridge turn colour, and that, along with the height, makes it the finest time to walk.
