What kind of parks are here
The choice here is compact: holiday homes and apartments for four to eight people, no studios and no group accommodation. The parks sit between the village and the dunes, within walking distance of the Dorpsstraat and the beach.
The beach and the dunes
Behind the dune ridge lie more than five kilometres of sandy beach with beach pavilions. The whole dune area belongs to the Duinen van Texel National Park. North of De Koog is the Slufter, a valley where storms push the sea in through a gap in the dunes; a semi-paved path leads there that also works with a pushchair.
Ecomare and the rest of the island
Ecomare sits at the edge of the village and is a rescue centre for seals and seabirds, a nature museum and the national park visitor centre all in one. There are sea aquariums with rays and dogfish. Den Burg is the largest village on Texel and lies inland; Oudeschild has the harbour and the beachcombers museum.
When to go
May and June are quiet, and the dune valleys fill with orchids. July and August are busiest, especially along the Dorpsstraat. Autumn suits beach walks and bird migration. Outside the season more paths are open, since the breeding-bird restrictions no longer apply.
