The Veluwe is the best dog-friendly holiday destination in the Netherlands. Hundreds of kilometres of off-leash forest, open heather moors, quiet sandy paths and holiday homes that are genuinely designed for dogs. No fifty-metre off-leash strips, but areas where you can walk for hours without ever putting the leash back on.
Why the Veluwe and not somewhere else?
There are several dog-friendly holiday destinations in the Netherlands, but the Veluwe has a few unique advantages. It's the largest contiguous forest area in the country (91,000 hectares), with dozens of off-leash zones inside it. You can walk for weeks without repeating a route.
On Parkzie you'll find 19 holiday homes on the Veluwe where dogs are welcome. That's not the highest absolute number in the Netherlands, but one of the highest concentrations per square kilometre of nature. And almost every park has something dog-specific: fenced garden, dog shower, tiled floor, poop bags at check-in.

Where can your dog run off-leash?
The Veluwe has more than twenty designated off-leash areas, spread across the whole region. Broadly, there are three types: open heath (Posbank, Leuvenumse Bos), dense forest (around Otterlo, Gortel) and mixed (Speulderbos, Ermelo). Every area has its own rules.
The most important rule: during nesting season (March to August) the rules are stricter. In some places your dog must stay on the leash, or may only go off-leash on specific paths. Always check the info board at the entrance, or check in advance via the Staatsbosbeheer website.
Popular off-leash areas that are almost always accessible:
- Speulderbos near Garderen — ancient beech trees, wide paths
- Leuvenumse Bos near Ermelo — quiet forest, stream
- Posbank near Rheden — open heath, panoramic view
- Caitwickerzand near Stroe — sand drift, great for dogs
- Drieseveld near Putten — mixed forest, few visitors
What makes a home genuinely dog-friendly?
"Pets allowed" and "dogs welcome" don't mean the same thing. The first tolerates a dog; the second has actually been set up for guests with dogs. You notice the difference most when you return from a rainy walk.
Signs of a truly dog-friendly home:
- Tiled floor or laminate at the entrance (or throughout) — easy to clean when muddy
- Fenced garden or at least a sealed section — not everywhere, check in advance
- Dog shower or outdoor tap — indispensable after a Veluwe walk
- Dog welcome kit at arrival (bags, blanket, basket)
- Provided dog beds ready for use
- No fitted carpets — they stink after one damp dog
Always ask at booking whether the garden is actually fenced. "Partly fenced" almost never means safe for dogs.
How do you choose between the 19 options?
Start with your priorities. Not every home offers everything. Here's how to narrow it down quickly:
For active dogs (labs, staffords, retrievers)
Choose a home near an off-leash area, ideally bordering forest. Not too many neighbours (barking). A fenced garden is handy but not critical if you walk actively several times a day.
For calm or older dogs
Fenced garden becomes critical. Pick a bungalow over a tiny lodge (room to lie down). A tiled floor at the entrance helps with incontinence or muddy paws.
For multiple dogs
Always check the surcharge policy in advance. Some parks charge per dog, some have a maximum (often 2). State this clearly at booking to avoid disappointment.
What do holiday homes with dogs on the Veluwe cost?
On average you pay €20 to €40 extra per dog per stay (not per night). A midweek in a basic bungalow starts at around €300-€400 for 2-4 people, without dog. So add 20-40 on top.
Prices swing significantly by season. In high season (July-August, Christmas holidays) homes with fenced gardens book up fast. If you're flexible, go in May, June, September or October — quiet, warm enough, and much cheaper.
Practical tips for travel and on-site
- Always bring bags, even if the park provides them. You go through them fast.
- Tick prevention works on the Veluwe. Check your dog (and yourself) after every walk.
- Fresh water front and back in your car. Dogs dehydrate in summer before you notice.
- Download the off-leash map (Staatsbosbeheer app) — easier than searching for a sign offline.
- Avoid midday in July-August. Dogs get heatstroke faster than people think.
- Watch for wildlife — red deer and wild boar are genuinely present. Leash the dog if you see or hear them.
On a Veluwe holiday your dog will probably sleep more than at any other time that year, and so will you.
